Medical Peel

The skin is the largest organ in our body. Every day thousands of cells die, flake off and are replaced by new cells from beneath the skin. However, as we age, this process begins to slow down while skin dullness and ageing appear.

Medical peel is a type of treatment that have been used for over 100 years to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells. An acid solution is applied on the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate production of new skin cells. It also tightens the skin, reduces fine lines, pigmentations as well as restoring a more youthful appearance. The skin crusts, scales and eventually peels off. The new skin in its place is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Peels can dramatically reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, dark spots, excessive oil production as well as roughness caused by prolong sun exposure.

Fair skinned patients are better candidates, if you have a darker skin tone, you may be treated with extra pre care requirements and to follow clinic procedures before and after treatment. Medical peels can be effective for people who have the following variety of skin conditions:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Shallow acne scars
  • Freckling

Note that a medical peel is not a substitute for a facelift. It cannot eliminate excessive or lax skin. However in many cases a medical peel is performed in conjunction with these face-lifting procedures.

Depending on your skin type and the desired results, your therapist may recommend a superficial, medium or deep medical peel. Your therapist will then select the proper chemical or mix of chemicals (salicylic glycolic acid, TCA or trichloroacetic acid) and apply the solution to various areas of skin. Once applied, the chemical produces a separation and peeling of the outer layers of the skin. This will stimulate the production of new skin from beneath.

Most patients experience a slight stinging sensation, which may last as long as few seconds to few minutes.

Reactions to medical peels are similar to a sunburn and range from mild to more pronounce. Generally the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery.

A light peel usually results in some redness, and possibly some scaling for a 3-7 days. Medium and deep peels can result in swelling and blisters that break open forming a crust and turning brown, followed by peeling which can last up to two weeks. At first the new skin may have the colour of significant sunburn. This will gradually fade to pink over the next several weeks. Moisturizer is recommended to relieve dryness. Following a medical peel, your new skin will be tighter, smoother and may be slightly lighter than it was before the procedure.

Following any skin peel, it is important to avoid any sun exposure as your new skin is very sensitive and is susceptible to injury. Always apply a wide spectrum (UVA & UVB blocking) sunblock of at least SPF 30 twenty minutes before you go outside. Your therapist will prescribe a proper home skin care treatment program to ensure proper healing.

At Skintech Medical, we uses a range of peels to achieve the optimal results depending on patient’s skin types. Our in house peels range from superficial, medium to deep peels. However the most commonly used and recommended type of peel would be DRBC Renew Peel, which its main ingredient is Lactic Acid.

Lactic acid is an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) derived from milk, which is combined with Canadian Willowherb (an anti-inflammatory) to create a unique minimal downtime peel. This targets the epidermis (the uppermost layer of the skin), breaking down the glue that holds the skin cells together. This enables a faster cell turnover, resulting in a more youthful appearance to the skin as the healthier layers of skin are brought to the surface.

Lactic acid is a great skin renewal and collagen building agent, and has several distinct advantages over glycolic acid. These include less irritation, and greater effectiveness in treating acne, hyperpigmentation and dehydration.

DRBC Renew Peel is suitable for most skin types and results can be noticed for epidermal hyperpigmentation, sun damage, mild acne, congestion, dull or lifeless skin and dehydration.

A course of 5 treatments is recommended, and then the skin is reassessed to determine if further treatments are required.

DRBC Renew Peel is:

  • Formulated with the highest concentration of pure naturally derived botanicals and high-octane cosmeceutical correctives.
  • Formulated with certified organic non-genetically modified ingredients wherever possible.
