Stretch marks are formed by different reasons, some reasons could be that the skin has been stretched excessively during pregnancy, weight gain or growth spurts. They appear as tiny tears on the skin. The skin has been stretched so much that it can’t be stretched anymore. Initially they appear red or purple because the dermal collagen is damaged, and the blood vessels dilations cause this colour change. Over time the redness starts to fade or become lighter than the skin around the area.
Almost 90% of pregnant women will get stretch marks, in young people; stretch marks are caused by growth spurts and or sudden excessive weight gain. Around 70% of females in their teens will get them and around 5% of males. Stretch marks can form on different parts of the body. It may appear on: abdomen, buttocks, thighs, hips, shoulders etc. sometimes sudden weight gain and body altering sports play a part in the development of stretch marks for instance weight lifting, also steroid drugs used for body building.
There are different options for your treatment. This includes Fractional Laser Resurfacing, derma roller and topical creams. Fractional Laser Resurfacing treatment acts upon the deeper collagen and elastin tissues as the treatment stimulates these areas of the skin. It also helps to renew the superficial saggy skin and be replaced with new tighter skin. At the same time, the laser can cause ablation of the skin that has been darkened by stretch marks. With each treatment 20% of your skin will be re-surfaced, the laser acts on the collagen stimulating it without harming the skins surface also helping the skin to become more like your normal skin. The skin appearance will be improved after a number of laser treatments the stretch marks will appear totally different in width, depth, texture and colour.
The therapist will clean the area to be treated and then apply a blue dye, which helps the laser to target only the stretch marks and not the surrounding skin. A local anaesthetic can be used to ensure a more comfortable, painless treatment. The laser is then glided over the stretch marks and per treatment can take between 20-25 minutes. Down time is short, and there is a quick healing process. You may require a series of treatments every 2 weeks. Every patient is different and how many sessions will be required can be determined through a consultation with one of our practitioners.
